Why are most Pandas named one word stated twice?

Ling-Ling, Xiang-Xiang, you get the picture. I'm just curious if anyone knows of a real reason for the double names; or if there are pandas named Smitty and Fran somewhere and I'm just not aware of them.

Its Chinese. Nicknames in Chinese are the same character twice.

In addition to the previous answers, the double name is a diminutive, like calling someone Billy, Sally etc
Most pandas are named in Chinese names, hence the usage of the repeated word, as it is common for the nicknames in chinese.

Irrevelantly, the polar bear gets the name in german, being named by his german care-givers, Knut.

Hope this helps.
