I need help with my fish purchase?

at http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_... it says the panda barb needs 30 gallons. I have a 10 gallon tank. but the panda barb only gets 5 inches. so the rule of thumb is that 1 inch of fish for 1 gallon. it would be fine in my aqurium. How come it says i need 30 gallons?

The so-called rule to which you refer is not a hard and fast rule. It typically isn't acknowledged by experienced aquarists. The best thing to do with that rule is jot it down on a piece of paper, crumple it and chuck it on the rubbish heap!

Consider this, many humans can easily fit in a wardrobe or clothes closet, right? So, it should be fine for a human to live in one, right? Of COURSE not!!!

The so-called 1 inch rule does not take into consideration the territorial requirements, swimming needs or bio-load requirements of the fish.

A tiny goldfish of 1.5 inches at purchase, would seemingly be fine in a 2 gallon bowl. However, these fish will grow to be 8 - 10 inches in length, so its absurd to think they are suitable for a 2 gallon bowl. The ''rule'' also doesn't consider the bio-load requirements of fish. Fish produce waste which require an established biologic filter to rid the water of toxins. Too many fish, regardless of how small will result in an overloaded bio-filter which will lead to the needless death of your fish.
